grass is always greener.
an old scandanavian tradition and now well established throughout europe and beyond, green roofs (turf roofs, sod roofs, living roofs, “torvtak” in Norwegian) aren’t just for hobbits. besides being cheap, their insulating qualities promise home owners a return on investment after only a few years, and they offer ample consolation to the environment gods.
they usually involve a high quality water proofing and root repellent system, a drainage system, filter cloth, a lightweight growing medium and plants. one problem is that they would most likely collapse if exposed to a sufficient mass of rain or snow, not to mention a summer barbecue crowd.
this pic is of a house in vale, colorado, taken by a friend who lives there and passes it each day. other fun examples of this style of “vegitecture” can be seen here.
